Sidewalks, Walkways & Flatwork
Create safe, attractive pathways and flatwork surfaces that enhance your property and last for years.

Why Concrete Walkways and Sidewalks Make Sense
Walkways and sidewalks are more than just ways to get from point A to point B. They guide visitors to your entrance, connect different areas of your property, and add curb appeal to your home or business. A well-designed concrete walkway tells people where to go and keeps them off your grass and landscaping.
Concrete is the best material for walkways because it is durable, low maintenance, and affordable. It handles foot traffic, weather, and time better than gravel, mulch, or stepping stones. Unlike pavers that can shift and become uneven, concrete stays smooth and level. And unlike wood decking, concrete does not rot, warp, or need constant maintenance.
We have been installing concrete walkways, sidewalks, and flatwork in Fairfield, OH since 2024. We know how to design pathways that are functional, safe, and attractive. Whether you need a simple front walkway, a winding garden path, or a commercial sidewalk, we can build it to last.
Types of Flatwork We Install
Flatwork is the term we use for any horizontal concrete surface. It includes walkways, sidewalks, steps, landings, and more. Here are the most common types of flatwork projects we handle:
- •Front walkways: The path from your driveway or street to your front door. This is one of the first things visitors see, so we make it attractive and inviting.
- •Backyard pathways: Connect your patio, shed, garden, or other features with well-designed walkways that keep your yard organized.
- •Public sidewalks: If you need to install or replace the sidewalk in front of your property, we handle all the permits and make sure it meets local codes.
- •Steps and landings: Concrete steps are safe, durable, and can be designed to match your walkways and entryways.
- •ADA-compliant ramps: We can install wheelchair ramps and accessible pathways that meet ADA requirements for slope, width, and handrails.
- •Commercial walkways: Connect parking lots to building entrances, create pedestrian paths, and improve safety on your commercial property.
No matter what type of flatwork you need, we follow the same process. We excavate to the proper depth, prepare a solid base, pour the concrete at the right thickness, and finish it to your specifications. We also make sure all walkways have proper drainage and slope so water runs off instead of pooling.
Design Options for Walkways and Sidewalks
Concrete walkways do not have to be plain gray strips. You have options when it comes to style and appearance. We can create walkways that match your home's architecture and your personal taste.
For a traditional look, we can pour smooth, straight walkways with clean edges. For something more interesting, we can add curves, borders, or decorative patterns. We can also use stamped concrete to make your walkway look like stone, brick, or tile.
Texture is another consideration. Smooth concrete looks nice but can be slippery when wet. We usually recommend a textured finish for outdoor walkways to improve traction and safety. Broom finish is the most common texture, but we can also do exposed aggregate or other finishes depending on your preference.
Color is an option too. We can add integral color to match or complement your driveway or home exterior. Borders in contrasting colors add visual interest without breaking the budget.
What to Expect During Installation
Most walkway projects take 1 to 3 days depending on the size and complexity. We start by marking out the path and removing any grass, plants, or old concrete in the way. Then we excavate to the proper depth (usually 4 to 6 inches) and compact the subgrade.
Next, we add a gravel base for drainage and stability. We set up forms along the edges to contain the concrete and create clean lines. For longer walkways, we install expansion joints every 8 to 10 feet to allow for movement and prevent cracking.
Then we pour the concrete, typically 4 inches thick for residential walkways. We finish the surface with your chosen texture and cut control joints to manage any cracking that might occur. After the concrete cures for 24 to 48 hours, you can walk on it. After 7 days, it is ready for normal use.
We clean up thoroughly when we are done. Any excess dirt or gravel is removed, and your landscaping is left in good condition. When you hire FCD Fairfield Concrete, you get professionals who respect your property and take pride in their work.
